TANGERANG, JurnalPost.com – The Community Service (PkM) team from the Faculty of Law at the Universitas Pembangunan Nasional Veteran Jakarta (FH UPNVJ) held a legal education seminar and provided free health screenings for the senior community at GKPI Tangerang on Monday, 19/10/2026.
The event, themed “Empowering Seniors to Prevent Violence, Neglect, and Family Disputes for the GKPI Tangerang Senior Community,” aims to increase legal awareness while strengthening the protection and well-being of the elderly.
The service program was carried out by a team of FH UPNVJ lecturers consisting of Elkristi Ferdinan Manuel, S.H., M.H., Ema Nurkhaerani, S.H., M.H., and Wendy Budiarti Rakhmi, S.H., M.H., LL.M.
In its implementation, the lecturer team was joined by several students from the UPNVJ Faculty of Law, namely Alif Hatta, Zahra Raihana Fauziyah, Hafifah Laila Burhan, and Fransisca Dealova Andriyanto.
The involvement of lecturers and students is part of the university's effort to bring legal education closer to the needs of the community, particularly for seniors who require attention and protection.
Improving Understanding of Inheritance Law and Senior Rights
One of the main focuses of this activity was to provide understanding regarding family law issues often faced by the public, especially concerning property ownership, the status of heirs, and inheritance arrangements.
Through the seminar, participants received explanations regarding the differences between inheritance, grants, and wills, including the legal consequences that must be considered before making decisions related to the transfer or distribution of assets.
This understanding is essential so that the public, especially the elderly, can make wise decisions and reduce the potential for disputes that may arise within the family.
In addition to discussing inheritance law, the service team provided education on protecting seniors from various forms of violence and neglect.
Participants were encouraged to understand the importance of recognizing risks, safeguarding personal rights, and knowing the steps to take when facing suspected violence, neglect, or detrimental family issues.
This education is expected to improve the ability of seniors to understand their rights and make informed decisions, while also encouraging families and the surrounding environment to pay more attention to the needs of the elderly.
Free Health Screenings Complement the Activity
Beyond focusing on legal education, this community service activity also provided free health screening services for members of the GKPI Tangerang senior community.
The presence of these health services is part of a service approach that combines knowledge enhancement with direct service to the community.
Through this activity, participants not only gained information regarding legal rights and protections but also had the opportunity to pay closer attention to their health conditions.
This approach demonstrates that the empowerment of seniors must be carried out comprehensively, considering legal, social, and health aspects.
Attention to the well-being of the elderly is also important in creating an inclusive and safe society that respects the dignity of every individual.
By combining legal seminars and health services, the FH UPNVJ Community Service Team strives to present activities that are relevant to community needs while providing direct benefits.
Involving Students in Community Service
The involvement of UPNVJ Faculty of Law students is a crucial part of this program's implementation.
Through direct interaction with the senior community, students have the opportunity to understand various social and legal issues faced by the public.
This experience also serves as a learning tool to improve communication skills, social sensitivity, and assistance skills for groups requiring special attention.
Thus, students do not only study legal theory in the classroom but also gain experience in applying knowledge to real-life situations.
This activity also demonstrates that higher education has a role in shaping a generation that possesses not only academic ability but also concern for social issues.
An Implementation of the Tri Dharma of Higher Education
The implementation of the legal seminar and free health screenings at GKPI Tangerang is a form of implementing the Tri Dharma of Higher Education, particularly in the field of community service.
Through this program, FH UPNVJ strives to bridge academic knowledge with the real needs developing in the community.
Community service also serves as a space for the academic community to understand various social challenges firsthand while offering education relevant to their fields of expertise.
Collaboration between universities and community groups is considered important for building sustainable legal awareness, especially in providing protection for the elderly.
Through this activity, the FH UPNVJ Community Service Team hopes that public legal literacy will increase, particularly regarding property ownership rights, inheritance law, protection from violence, and the prevention of senior neglect.
Furthermore, this activity is expected to strengthen collective awareness regarding the importance of maintaining health, building harmonious family relationships, and creating a social environment that is more caring toward seniors.
This service program serves as a reminder that knowledge holds value not only when studied but also when applied to help resolve life's challenges in society.
Through education on inheritance law, senior empowerment, and free health screenings, FH UPNVJ continues to encourage the tangible contribution of higher education in strengthening the protection, well-being, and respect for the rights and dignity of the elderly.
