SURABAYA, JurnalPost.com — Lecturers from the Universitas Pembangunan Nasional “Veteran” Jawa Timur (UPN Jatim) provided training on public speaking ethics to middle school students during the Jatim Fest 2026 event at Grand City Surabaya on Sunday (4/10/2026).
The activity, organized by Tunas Hijau Indonesia, served as an effort to improve communication skills while building students' confidence in expressing ideas before others.
Participants received instruction on how to speak effectively and politely, build self-confidence, and adapt their communication style to their audience and the situation at hand.
UPN Jatim lecturer, Reza Mehdi Fauzi, emphasized that public speaking ability is not just about the courage to perform. This skill also encompasses ethics, word choice, body language, intonation, and the ability to respect others.
“Public speaking is not only about how we convey a message, but also how we respect those who are listening. Therefore, ethics is a crucial part of communication,” said Reza during the session.
Learning to Express Opinions Politely and Confidently
During the session, students were encouraged to understand the importance of using polite language, avoiding interruptions, listening well to others, and expressing opinions without belittling others.
The material was delivered interactively, allowing participants to not only receive theory but also gain the opportunity to practice speaking in front of an audience.
According to Reza, communication skills need to be developed from a young age. The confidence built through speaking practice can serve as a foundation for students in academic activities, organizations, and social interactions.
“Children must be brave enough to express their opinions, but they must do so politely. Being brave enough to speak and being able to respect others are two things that must go hand in hand,” he said.
Students Practice Public Speaking
The activity, part of the Jatim Fest 2026 series, was met with enthusiasm from the students. Participants were given the opportunity to ask questions, engage in discussions, and try expressing their opinions in front of their peers.
Through this activity, students are expected to not only gain the courage to perform in public but also become confident, polite, and responsible young communicators capable of conveying ideas positively.
The collaboration between UPN Jatim academics and Tunas Hijau Indonesia at Jatim Fest 2026 also highlights the importance of communication education for the younger generation.
The training on public speaking ethics is expected to provide students with the experience to develop their potential while preparing themselves to face various challenges in the future.
