YOGYAKARTA, JurnalPost.com — Student teachers from the Educational Internship Program (PK) at Yogyakarta State University (UNY) have implemented the Market Place Activity method in an Indonesian language class at MAN 2 Sleman. This method was used to help students understand the linguistic rules of news texts while learning to distinguish between facts and opinions.
The learning session took place on August 12, 2026, and involved students from class XI A. The material covered the linguistic features of news texts and the ability to identify information based on facts versus opinions.
This lesson was also designed as a contribution by the UNY student teachers toward supporting Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) number four, which focuses on quality education, particularly by strengthening students' literacy and critical thinking skills.
In practice, the student teachers used the Market Place Activity method to create a more interactive learning environment. The activity began with an explanation of the learning stages, after which students were divided into groups to work independently.
Each group was tasked with finding information via social media. The information gathered was then written on large paper and organized into concept maps.
Subsequently, each group appointed one member to act as a booth attendant, while the other members visited the booths of other groups. The booth attendants were responsible for explaining their group's findings and research to visiting students.
Once all information was collected, students returned to their respective groups to present their findings in front of the class. This structure ensured that learning was not centered solely on the teacher's explanation, but also involved searching for, processing, explaining, and discussing information.
The lesson focused on several linguistic elements used in news texts. Students studied the use of direct and indirect speech, conjunctions, reporting verbs, and appropriate word choice.
In addition to studying linguistic elements, students were asked to identify the differences between facts and opinions. They examined news texts, discussed them in groups, and then determined which parts constituted facts or opinions, along with the underlying reasons.
This approach is expected to help students not only understand the language structure of news texts but also develop the ability to evaluate information more critically.
The ability to distinguish between fact and opinion is considered crucial given the rapid flow of information received by the public through various digital platforms. With this skill, students are expected to avoid accepting information at face value without first analyzing its content and source.
Varied learning methods are also intended to help students grasp the material while developing critical thinking skills. This process is expected to foster a more responsible and selective attitude when receiving and sharing information.
Through the application of Market Place Activity, Indonesian language learning is expected to build more active literacy practices. Students do not just read the material, but also practice analyzing, evaluating, and communicating the information they have acquired.
The learning activity is also designed to continue in the form of a project. Students will create vlogs using social media platforms as a medium to apply the theory they have learned to real-world activities.
With this approach, the study of news texts does not stop at theoretical understanding in the classroom. Students are given the space to connect linguistic material, the ability to distinguish between fact and opinion, and the use of digital media in more contextual activities.
