LEBAK, JurnalPost.com — Efforts to maintain the sustainability of sugar palm plants while developing the community's economic potential are being carried out by IPB University through the 'Dosen Pulang Kampung' (Lecturers Returning Home) program in West Citorek Village, Cibeber District, Lebak Regency, Banten. This program focuses on developing a sugar palm nursery as an initial step to support plant regeneration and the sustainable use of natural resources.
The sugar palm plant (Arenga pinnata) holds economic value because various parts and products derived from it can be utilized for commercial goods. However, developing this commodity requires the availability of adequate seedlings to ensure continuous cultivation.
Through the development of this nursery, the Kasepuhan Citorek Barat community is expected to have a source of seedlings that can be used to expand sugar palm cultivation while maintaining the presence of these plants in their environment.
Involving Academics and the Local Community
This activity is being carried out by an IPB University team led by Prof. Amzu, along with Dr. Agus Hikmat, Primadhika Al Manar, S.Hut., M.Si., and Santa, a technician from the Laboratory of Bioprospecting and Plant Utilization at the Faculty of Forestry and Environment, IPB University.
The development of the nursery is part of a program titled Assistance in Sugar Palm Cultivation and Product Diversification for Nature Conservation and Economic Improvement of the Kasepuhan Citorek Barat Community, Lebak, Banten.
This program focuses not only on providing seedlings but also on strengthening community knowledge regarding the initial stages of sugar palm cultivation, from nursery management to the maintenance of young plants.
The existence of the nursery is expected to help the community understand the importance of seedling quality and plant care before they are moved to planting sites.

Community participation is a key factor in the program's success, as the sustainability of the nursery requires consistent management and maintenance, even after the assistance period ends.
With the direct involvement of residents, knowledge regarding sugar palm propagation is expected to develop into skills that are continuously applied independently.
Sugar Palm Nursery to Support Nature Conservation
Beyond its economic value, the development of sugar palm plants is linked to efforts to maintain vegetation sustainability in the Kasepuhan Citorek Barat area.
Providing seedlings through a nursery is a crucial step in supporting the regeneration of the sugar palm population. However, the success of these efforts still depends on planting, maintenance, and the suitability of the environmental conditions where the plants are developed.
Therefore, sugar palm development must consider local ecological characteristics so that cultivation activities do not overlook the function of natural resource conservation.
This approach is considered relevant for the Kasepuhan Citorek Barat community, which has a close relationship with the natural environment and local wisdom in resource management.
Through community-needs-based assistance, sugar palm development is expected to proceed in tandem with efforts to maintain environmental balance.
Opening Opportunities for Economically Valuable Product Development
From an economic perspective, the existence of the nursery can serve as a foundation for long-term sugar-palm-based business development.
Sugar palm is known as a plant with diverse potential uses, including as a raw material for food products and other processed goods. This potential can be developed if supported by the availability of productive plants and sustainable management.
With seedlings available from the nursery, the community is expected to have greater opportunities to expand sugar palm cultivation and ensure the availability of raw materials for future processing activities.
However, the economic benefits of nursery development cannot be obtained instantly. Sugar palm plants require time to grow until they reach the productive phase, making long-term planning and continuous assistance essential.
Strengthening cultivation skills must also go hand-in-hand with product development and market access so that the added value of sugar palm plants can provide economic benefits to the community.
Encouraging Independent and Sustainable Management
The IPB University 'Dosen Pulang Kampung' program is a form of applying higher education knowledge to directly address community needs.
Through activities in West Citorek, the university seeks to bridge scientific approaches in plant propagation and cultivation with the experience and local knowledge of the Kasepuhan community.
Looking ahead, the sustainability of the nursery is an aspect that requires attention. The availability of seedlings must be followed by planting, maintenance, and management activities carried out consistently.
If developed sustainably, this sugar palm nursery has the potential to become a means of supporting plant conservation while opening opportunities for improving the community's economy.
Thus, sugar palm development in West Citorek Village is directed not only at increasing production but also at efforts to preserve natural resources so they continue to provide benefits for future generations.
