Jakarta, JurnalPost.com – A team of Industrial Engineering lecturers from Universitas Mercu Buana (UMB) held a Community Service (PkM) program focused on developing technology-driven jamu businesses, improving product quality, and strengthening distribution systems.
The activity, titled “Community Empowerment through Jamu Business Development via Technology Application and Enhancement of Skills, Quality, and Product Distribution” was carried out in the West Jakarta region on Wednesday, April 15, 2026.
The training targeted housewives and business owners looking to improve their ability to manage jamu businesses in a more structured manner. Beyond production processes, participants were equipped with knowledge regarding packaging, distribution, and the use of technology to support business growth.
The team of lecturers involved consisted of Ir. Silvi Ariyanti, M.Sc., Puspita Dewi Widayat, S.T., M.T., Bonitasari Nurul Alfa, S.T., M.M., M.Sc., Agung Chandra, S.T., M.T., M.M., Diah Utami, S.T., M.T., and Ketty Siti Salamah, S.T., M.T.
Developing Jamu Businesses from Production to Distribution
During the session, participants received training on the manufacturing and development of traditional jamu, the use of appropriate technology, distribution and transportation management, and the application of ergonomics and safety principles in the packaging process.

The material was designed so that participants not only understand how to produce jamu but also know the steps required to scale their products into a formal business.
Participants were introduced to the relationship between raw material availability, production processes, packaging, distribution, and customer service.
One of the topics covered was the introduction of the concept of Supply Chain Management (SCM) within home-based jamu businesses.
Through a simple approach, participants were encouraged to understand that home-based businesses also have supply chains that need to be managed effectively to ensure production and distribution run smoothly.
“Home-based businesses actually have supply chains, too. Starting from obtaining raw materials, processing products, and packaging, to how the product is received by the consumer,” the implementation team explained.

Utilizing Technology and Digital Channels
Transportation aspects also received attention. In developing a jamu business, the distribution process is a critical component because it determines how the product reaches the consumer while maintaining its quality.
Participants were introduced to various distribution alternatives available to business owners today, ranging from direct sales to the use of shipping services and digital marketing channels.
The use of such technology is considered helpful for home-based businesses to reach a wider consumer base without having to rely entirely on conventional sales.
To provide a more concrete illustration, the activity featured insights from the MSME Jamu Sri Lestari. This business serves as an example of how to develop a home-based jamu business through fresh and frozen jamu products, as well as the use of digital media for marketing.
Participants were able to discuss experiences in business management, challenges in maintaining product quality, and ways to build relationships with consumers.

Focusing on Ergonomics and Packaging Safety
In addition to production and distribution, ergonomic aspects of business activities were also discussed during the training.
Participants were given an understanding of the importance of creating safe and comfortable work processes, especially when performing repetitive production or packaging tasks.
Proper packaging is also considered to play a vital role in maintaining product quality during storage and distribution.
Thus, jamu business development is not solely oriented toward production volume but also considers product quality, workplace safety, and the comfort of the business owner.
The activity was carried out through a combination of material presentation, hands-on practice, discussions, and experience-sharing sessions between the lecturer team, partners, and participants.
This approach is expected to help participants understand the material more practically and adapt it to their respective business conditions.
Through this Community Service program, Universitas Mercu Buana encourages the community, especially housewives and MSME players, to develop jamu businesses that are more adaptive to technological developments and changing public consumption patterns.
Business development is not only directed at the ability to produce goods but also includes improving quality, packaging, distribution management, work process efficiency, and the use of digital channels.
This activity also serves as part of the university's contribution to supporting community empowerment and the development of local product-based businesses in the DKI Jakarta area.
