CEPU, JurnalPost.com — Hundreds of kindergarten (TK) and elementary school (SD) students from various schools in the Cepu region and its surroundings participated in an Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) 3 educational program at the Human Resources Development Center for Oil and Gas (PPSDM Migas) on Friday (16/10/2026).
The event, held at the PPSDM Migas firefighting facility, provided an opportunity for the children to learn about the importance of safety, emergency preparedness, and the duties of firefighters.
This educational visit involved five school groups: Santa Louisa Catholic Kindergarten and Elementary School with 50 students, NU Muslimat Kindergarten 1, Balun NU Muslimat Kindergarten 3 with 63 students, Al Furqon Kedungtuban Kindergarten with 106 students, and Sunan Kalijaga Islamic Kindergarten in Cepu, which brought 48 students.
During the event, students were introduced to workplace safety through interactive, age-appropriate lessons. The children were also invited to explore the various tools used by firefighters to handle emergency situations.
Head of General Affairs at PPSDM Migas, Andhy Mahendra, stated that his office continues to welcome educational institutions to learn more about the oil and gas industry, including the safety aspects that are vital to its operations.
"PPSDM Migas is always open to visits from all levels of education. This is important to provide an early understanding of the oil and gas industry, ranging from the upstream and downstream sectors to supporting activities," said Andhy.
According to him, introducing a safety culture does not have to wait until someone enters the workforce. Understanding potential hazards, preventive measures, and emergency preparedness can be instilled from school age.
Andhy believes the visit by kindergarten and elementary students to the PPSDM Migas firefighting facility is a beneficial form of learning, as children gain direct experience outside the classroom environment.
"The visit of kindergarten and elementary students from around the Cepu area to the PPSDM Migas firefighting facility is a very positive step that should be continued. This activity is an effective means of instilling awareness and OHS 3 aspects from an early age," he added.
Learning to Identify Firefighting Equipment
One of the topics introduced during the event was the basics of firefighting. Participants received simple explanations regarding fire management and an introduction to portable fire extinguishers (APAR).
This material is part of an effort to build an understanding that safety is a shared responsibility, whether at school, at home, or in the workplace.
In addition to the explanations, the students participated in interactive activities that provided insight into how firefighters work.
The atmosphere became even more exciting when the activity moved to a water-spraying simulation session. This activity was one of the most anticipated parts of the agenda, as the participants were able to witness the use of firefighting equipment firsthand.
Through this experience, it is hoped that the children will not only recognize the equipment and duties of firefighters but also understand the importance of staying alert and seeking help from adults or officials when facing dangerous situations.
Instilling a Safety Culture from School Age
The educational visit to PPSDM Migas also served as a way to introduce various professions related to the energy industry to the younger generation.
Beyond the professions directly involved in oil and gas processing, the industry relies on support staff responsible for security, safety, and emergency response.
This introduction is expected to broaden the students' horizons regarding the world of work while building awareness that safety procedures play a crucial role in various activities.
For early childhood learners, learning through observation and direct experience can be an engaging way to understand concepts they were previously unfamiliar with.
Through this activity, PPSDM Migas hopes that understanding of OHS 3 and emergency preparedness can continue to be introduced to the community, especially to children in the vicinity of Cepu.
Early safety education is also expected to foster positive habits that can be applied in daily life, from recognizing potential hazards to understanding the importance of following safety instructions.
