JurnalPost.com – Early childhood education does not focus solely on the ability to recognize letters, numbers, or other academic skills. There is a much more fundamental aspect that requires attention from the start: character formation. Children who grow up with values of honesty, care, responsibility, and resilience possess essential tools to face various life challenges in the future.

The age of 0 to 6 is known as the golden period or golden age. During this period, a child's brain development occurs very rapidly. Various experiences gained through interactions with family, the school environment, and the community play a crucial role in shaping their mindset, emotions, and behavior.

Therefore, character education should begin as soon as a child is within the family environment. Simple habits applied consistently can become the foundation for a child's personality development into adulthood.

Character Education as a Life Foundation

Character is a collection of values, attitudes, and habits that guide a person in determining actions and making decisions. Good character is reflected in one's ability to behave honestly, take responsibility, respect others, and do the right thing even when not being watched.

In the world of education, academic intelligence certainly plays an important role. However, intellectual ability must be balanced with character formation.

A child with high academic achievement is not necessarily capable of facing life's problems if they are not equipped with discipline, empathy, honesty, and the ability to manage emotions.

Conversely, a child who has been accustomed to being responsible, respecting others, and trying to solve problems from a young age will have a stronger foundation for facing change and challenges.

Thus, character education is not just a supplement to the learning process, but a fundamental part of education itself.

Character Values to Instill Early On

Strengthening character in early childhood can begin by introducing simple values that are close to daily life.

First, honesty and responsibility. Children need to be accustomed to speaking honestly, admitting mistakes, and taking responsibility for their actions. For example, returning items to their original place, tidying up toys after use, and admitting mistakes without excessive fear.

Second, empathy and care. A caring attitude can be fostered through the habit of sharing, helping friends, and understanding the feelings of others. Children also need to be invited to recognize that everyone has needs and feelings that deserve to be respected.

Third, discipline and independence. Getting used to following daily routines, maintaining personal hygiene, and completing simple tasks appropriate for their age can help children develop discipline as well as self-confidence.

Fourth, politeness and respect. The use of words like "please," "sorry," and "thank you" are simple habits that have significant meaning in building social relationships.

Fifth, resilience and a never-give-up attitude. Children need to understand that failure is part of the learning process. When experiencing difficulties, children should be encouraged to try again, rather than being immediately scolded or compared to others.

These values do not have to be taught through long explanations. In fact, habituation in daily activities is often a method that is easier for children to understand.

The Role of Family, School, and Community

The family is the first educational environment for a child. From birth, children begin to recognize various behaviors through interactions with parents and other family members.

Children tend to imitate what they see and experience. Therefore, the example set by adults has a major influence on character formation.

Parents who are accustomed to speaking politely, keeping promises, and daring to apologize when making mistakes are providing real examples of life values.

Such examples are often easier for children to understand than advice delivered repeatedly without being accompanied by action.

In addition to the family, Early Childhood Education (PAUD) institutions also play an important role in expanding a child's social experience.

In the school environment, children learn to interact with peers, follow shared rules, respect teachers, work together, and resolve differences of opinion.

Teachers are not only tasked with delivering learning materials but also serve as role models in demonstrating patience, fairness, care, and responsibility.

Meanwhile, the community environment also influences character formation through various social experiences encountered by the child.

Collaboration between family, school, and community is necessary so that the values taught can be applied consistently in daily life.

Practical Steps to Build Children's Character

Strengthening character does not always require complicated learning methods. Parents and educators can start through simple activities carried out continuously.

One step that can be applied is to build a daily routine with clear and consistent rules. For example, getting children used to tidying up toys, washing hands before eating, and saying greetings when meeting others.

Games and stories can also be effective tools for introducing moral values. Through fairy tales or role-playing activities, children can learn about honesty, friendship, cooperation, and responsibility without feeling like they are being lectured.

In addition, parents and teachers need to appreciate the child's effort, not just focus on the final result.

When a child tries to complete a task even if they have not yet succeeded, support and appreciation for the process can help build their courage and resilience.

Open communication is no less important. Children need to be given the opportunity to express their feelings, voice their opinions, and share their daily experiences.

By listening to children with full attention, adults can help them recognize emotions while learning to understand the feelings of others.

Amidst the development of digital technology, guidance on gadget usage also becomes an important part of character education.

Parents need to set screen time limits screen time that are appropriate for the child's age and needs, choose beneficial content, and ensure that the use of technology does not replace opportunities to play, move, and interact directly.

Building a Character-Driven Generation for the Future

Character formation is a long process that requires patience, role modeling, and consistency. The results may not be visible in a short time, but good habits instilled early on can be a valuable asset throughout a child's life.

Strengthening character education is also in line with government policy through Presidential Regulation Number 87 of 2017 concerning the Strengthening of Character Education. This policy emphasizes the importance of strengthening character values through synergy between educational units, families, and the community.

Ultimately, the success of education is not measured solely by academic ability or achievements obtained by the child. Education also needs to produce individuals who possess integrity, social care, independence, and the ability to face various challenges.

Children who grow up in an environment full of love, receive good role modeling, and are accustomed to applying positive values have a greater chance of developing into individuals of character.

Instilling character from an early age means building a foundation for the birth of a future generation that is not only intellectually intelligent but also honest, empathetic, responsible, and resilient in facing life.
