SINGAPORE, JurnalPost.com— Singapore has raised its alert level regarding the potential for transboundary haze after hotspot activity in several Indonesian regions was observed to have increased over the past few days.
Singapore's National Environment Agency (NEA) warned on Monday (August 24) that the country's air quality could potentially worsen throughout this week if dry weather conditions and wind directions facilitate the movement of smoke toward Singapore.
The NEA stated that an increase in hotspot activity and haze began to appear throughout the weekend. Hotspots and significant plumes of smoke were primarily detected in Kalimantan and the southern regions of Sumatra.
Additionally, several smoke plumes were also observed appearing in the Riau region.
"We observed an increase in hotspot activity and haze over the weekend, with hotspots and dense smoke plumes detected primarily in Kalimantan and southern Sumatra. Some smoke plumes were also observed in Riau," the NEA stated via Facebook.
According to the agency, dry weather conditions are expected to persist throughout this week. This situation has the potential to increase the risk of land fires while raising the likelihood of haze formation.
The NEA is also monitoring wind direction, which is forecast to blow from the south or southeast. Under certain conditions, these winds could carry smoke from the affected areas toward Singapore.
Consequently, Singapore may experience sporadic periods of haze if fire activity and smoke plumes in the region continue to increase.
