Protecting personal data is a shared responsibility in the digital era.

JurnalPost.com – The advancement of information technology has brought significant convenience to daily life. People can now communicate, learn, shop, conduct financial transactions, and store various documents digitally via the internet.

Behind this convenience lie security risks that require attention, particularly regarding data breaches and the misuse of personal information. Most digital services require user data, ranging from full names, addresses, and phone numbers to email addresses and financial information.

Personal data is sensitive information because it can be used to identify an individual. As more activities move online, the need to secure this information grows.

Therefore, every technology user must be aware of the importance of personal data protection to use digital services safely and responsibly.

The Importance of Personal Data Protection

Personal data protection in Indonesia is legally grounded in Law Number 27 of 2022 concerning Personal Data Protection (PDP Law).

This regulation governs the protection of personal data during processing activities, including the obligation of data controllers to maintain the security of the information they manage.

The importance of digital security is also reflected in the Indonesian Digital Society Index (IMDI) 2025 publication by the Ministry of Communication and Digital.

According to data in the publication, 22.5 percent of respondents stated they always use strong passwords, while another 29.8 percent admitted to doing so frequently.

These figures indicate that using strong passwords as a digital security measure is not yet consistently practiced by all respondents.

This condition serves as a reminder that understanding digital security must be followed by adopting good habits in daily activities.

Factors Contributing to Data Breaches

Data breaches and misuse can occur due to various factors, one of which is the use of easily guessed passwords.

Some users still use birth dates, personal names, or simple number combinations as passwords for their digital accounts.

Security risks increase when the same password is used for multiple accounts. If one account is compromised by unauthorized parties, other accounts are also at risk.

Additionally, digital fraud through phishing is a threat that requires vigilance.

Phishing is a fraudulent attempt to trick users into surrendering confidential information through messages, emails, or fake websites that mimic official services.

Perpetrators typically attempt to obtain sensitive information, such as passwords, verification codes, or financial data, for malicious use.

The habit of oversharing personal information on social media and downloading applications from untrusted sources can also increase risks to user security and privacy.

The Impact of Personal Data Misuse

The misuse of personal data can lead to various detrimental consequences for the owner of the information.

Data that falls into the hands of irresponsible parties can be used for identity theft, account takeovers, or fraudulent activities conducted in the victim's name.

Exposed contact information can also lead to a constant influx of suspicious messages, calls, and offers.

In certain conditions, personal data misuse can even cause financial loss and disrupt an individual's comfort and sense of security.

Therefore, maintaining personal data security is not just about using technology; it is part of protecting one's private life amidst increasing digital activity.

How to Protect Personal Data on the Internet

To reduce the risk of data breaches and misuse, several digital security habits can be adopted.

First, use strong and unique passwords for every important account. Passwords should not contain personal information that is easily discovered by others.

Second, enable two-factor authentication whenever available. This feature provides an extra layer of security because logging into an account requires verification beyond just a password.

Third, never share One-Time Password (OTP) codes, PINs, or passwords with anyone, including those claiming to be official service representatives.

Fourth, always check the website address before entering personal information and avoid suspicious links received via messages or email.

Fifth, limit the personal information shared on social media and check application permissions before installing them on your device.

In addition to these steps, users should regularly update their operating systems and applications. Software updates generally include security patches to reduce the risk of system vulnerability exploitation.

Consistently applying these simple habits can help strengthen account security and protect personal information from various digital threats.

Data Protection is a Shared Responsibility

Personal data protection is not only the responsibility of internet users but also involves digital service providers and the government.

Companies or organizations that collect user information are obligated to manage data according to legitimate processing purposes, maintain confidentiality, and implement adequate security systems.

Service providers must also provide clear information regarding the types of data collected, the purpose of its use, and how that information is managed.

Meanwhile, the government plays a crucial role in strengthening data protection through regulation, oversight, and public education.

Educational institutions and families can also contribute by building awareness about the importance of maintaining privacy and using the internet safely from an early age.

If you find indications of personal data misuse, you should immediately secure the affected account, change your password, and report the incident through official channels.

Building Digital Security Awareness

Personal data security is an essential part of using technology wisely and responsibly.

Although the development of digital services offers many benefits, every user must understand the risks that can arise from information misuse.

Using strong passwords, activating two-factor authentication, being vigilant against fake links, and limiting the spread of personal information are fundamental steps that can be taken.

On the other hand, collaboration between the public, digital service providers, educational institutions, and the government is necessary to create a safer digital environment.

By building awareness and consistently applying security habits, the public can leverage technological advancements without compromising privacy and personal data security.
