JurnalPost.com - The development of digital technology has brought major changes to the world of work. Various sectors now leverage technology to accelerate processes, save time, and increase efficiency. The use of computers, digital applications, automation systems, and artificial intelligence or Artificial Intelligence (AI) allows tasks that previously took considerable time to be completed much faster.

Behind these conveniences, concerns have emerged regarding the sustainability of the workforce. The presence of technology raises an important question: does digitalization truly help humans work more productively, or is it slowly replacing the human role?

In my view, technology has a great capacity to increase labor productivity. However, these benefits depend heavily on how the technology is applied. Technology should be a tool to support human work, not merely a means to replace the workforce.

When technology is used to handle repetitive and time-consuming tasks, workers can shift their focus to more important duties. Therefore, productivity is measured not only by the volume of work completed but also by the effectiveness of time, energy, and resource utilization.

The Role of Technology in Increasing Productivity

One example of digitalization that is increasingly common is the use of AI in daily work activities. This technology can assist in searching for information, summarizing materials, processing data, developing ideas, translating languages, and drafting documents.

With the help of AI, a number of tasks that previously took hours can be completed in a shorter time. Nevertheless, the results produced by technology still require human review and evaluation to ensure they meet actual needs and conditions.

This shows that the presence of technology does not always mean replacing the workforce entirely. In many situations, technology actually changes the way humans perform their work.

Workers today cannot rely solely on manual skills; they also need to understand how to utilize digital tools to support their tasks and responsibilities. Thus, technological development is changing the types of skills required in the workplace.

Digitalization Challenges for the Workforce

Although it offers various benefits, the process of digitalization is not always easy for every worker. The ability to use technology varies from one individual to another.

Some workers are able to adapt quickly to technological developments, while others require more time and training. These differences in ability have the potential to create a digital skills gap in the workplace.

Workers with adequate digital skills tend to adapt to changes more easily. Conversely, those who have not mastered technology risk facing difficulties in performing jobs that are increasingly dependent on digital systems.

This challenge is felt even more acutely when companies begin implementing automation to reduce routine tasks. Various duties that were previously performed manually can now be handled using computers, machines, or automated systems.

For companies, adopting technology can increase operational efficiency and reduce costs. However, for workers, automation can also cause anxiety because some types of jobs have the potential to see a reduced need for human labor.

In my opinion, this situation highlights the importance of workforce readiness in facing change. Workers cannot continuously rely on existing skills but must have the willingness to learn and develop new capabilities.

Technological change will continue to occur. Therefore, skills considered important today may not necessarily have the same level of demand in the future.

The Importance of Digital Education and Training

Education and training are essential steps to help the workforce navigate digital transformation.

Companies should not simply provide new technology and expect workers to be able to use it immediately. Workers also need to receive adequate training to understand the functions, benefits, and effective ways to use the technology.

With this approach, digitalization can become a means to increase worker competence, rather than just being used as an excuse to reduce the number of employees.

Beyond companies, the government and educational institutions have a responsibility to prepare human resources capable of adapting to technological developments.

Education should not only emphasize theoretical understanding but also equip students with skills relevant to the needs of the workplace.

The ability to use technology, think critically, solve problems, communicate, and collaborate is becoming increasingly important in a constantly changing work environment.

In my view, these skills need to be developed continuously because the success of the workforce in the digital era is determined not only by mastery of technology but also by the ability to utilize technology appropriately.

Humans and Technology Play Complementary Roles

Amid the development of AI and automation, human capabilities related to creativity, empathy, and judgment remain highly valuable.

Technology can help process large amounts of data and generate information quickly. However, humans are still needed to understand context, consider various possibilities, and make decisions appropriate to the situation at hand.

This shows that humans and technology have different strengths. Both can complement each other if used with the right approach.

Problems can arise when technology is viewed only as a means to replace human labor. If the primary goal of implementing technology is to reduce the number of workers, company productivity might increase, but that increase does not necessarily have a positive impact on worker welfare.

Conversely, if technology is utilized to help workers develop their skills and produce higher-quality work, the benefits of digitalization can be felt more broadly.

In my opinion, companies need to consider the balance between operational efficiency and worker welfare. The success of digitalization should not be judged solely by cost reduction, but also by the improvement in work quality and the ability of the workforce to grow.

The Future of the Workforce in the Digital Era

The question of whether technology will help or replace the workforce cannot be answered from a single perspective.

Technology is indeed capable of taking over a number of tasks, particularly those that are routine, repetitive, and easily automated. However, technological development can also create new types of jobs and increase the demand for skills that were not previously in high demand.

In my view, the most important thing is not to stop technological development, but to ensure the workforce is prepared to face it.

If workers are given the opportunity to improve their knowledge and skills, technology can be a tool that drives productivity. Conversely, if technological development is not balanced with competence building, the gap between workers who master technology and those who cannot use it may widen.

Therefore, collaboration between companies, the government, educational institutions, and the workforce is essential in creating a more inclusive digital transformation.

Companies need to provide opportunities for skill development, the government can support through labor policies and training programs, while educational institutions need to align learning with the evolving needs of the workplace.

Ultimately, workplace digitalization should not be viewed as a competition between humans and technology. Technology is fundamentally a tool, while humans retain the important role of determining how that tool is utilized.

Productivity is not just a matter of speed in completing work, but also relates to how technology helps humans produce work that is more effective, high-quality, and valuable.

In my opinion, the future of the workplace is not determined by who is superior between humans and technology, but by the ability of both to work side-by-side.

Technology can handle routine and repetitive tasks, while humans can focus more on creativity, innovation, communication, and decision-making.

With the support of adequate education, training, and skill development, digitalization does not have to be a threat to the workforce. Instead, technological development can be an opportunity to shape a workforce that is more productive, adaptive, and capable of facing the changing times.
