SURABAYA, JurnalPost.com — Students from the Faculty of Law at Universitas 17 Agustus 1945 (Untag) Surabaya participated in a court observation session at the Surabaya Religious Court on Monday, October 5, 2026. This activity is part of a practical learning initiative designed to deepen students' understanding of the judicial system and the application of law in case resolution.
Through this visit, students had the opportunity to witness firsthand the proceedings within the religious court environment. They were able to observe various stages of case examination, the role of the panel of judges, and the application of legal procedures throughout the trial process.
This activity provided a unique experience for the students, allowing them to compare the material studied in the classroom with actual practices in the courtroom.
Direct observation also helped students understand that case resolution is not solely based on statutory regulations but requires precision, objectivity, and professionalism from all parties involved.
Strengthening Legal Theory and Practice
For law students, court observation is an essential tool for gaining insight into the operational mechanisms of judicial institutions in Indonesia.
During the observation, students gained an overview of courtroom decorum, the case examination process, and the responsibilities of judges in exercising their authority according to applicable legal provisions.
This experience is expected to strengthen students' ability to analyze legal issues while understanding the importance of applying the principles of justice and legal certainty in every judicial process.
Beyond expanding their knowledge, this activity served as an opportunity for students to familiarize themselves with the professional legal environment they may enter after completing their education.
Understanding trial practice is a vital asset, particularly for students interested in pursuing careers as advocates, judges, or other legal professionals.
Encouraging Critical and Professional Thinking
The court observation at the Surabaya Religious Court reflects the importance of experience-based learning methods in higher education, particularly in the field of law.
By witnessing the judicial process directly, students are expected to not only grasp academic theory but also develop critical, analytical, and systematic thinking skills when addressing legal issues.
Such activities also serve as a means to instill awareness regarding the importance of ethics, integrity, and responsibility in practicing law.

Through field experience, students can see how legal principles are applied in real-world situations, including the importance of professional conduct and respect for court procedures.
The court observation activity is expected to enrich the academic experience of Untag Surabaya law students while providing motivation to continue improving their competence throughout their studies.
Learning that integrates theory and practice is a crucial step in preparing future law graduates who possess the knowledge, skills, and integrity to face professional challenges and contribute positively to society.
