Takalar, JurnalPost.com — Lecturers from the Universitas Muslim Indonesia (UMI) held a Community Service (PKM) program featuring training on the production of organic fertilizer from duck eggshells at the Mizanul Ulum Islamic Boarding School (YW UMI), Sanrobone Village, Sanrobone District, Takalar Regency, South Sulawesi, on Thursday (15/10/2026).
The activity, titled “Empowering Students through Training on Duck Eggshell-Based Organic Fertilizer Production for School Garden Utilization” was attended by 30 teachers from the Mizanul Ulum Islamic Boarding School.
This training aims to improve participants' understanding of processing organic waste into useful materials while encouraging the use of school grounds as a medium for environmental education and simple agriculture.
The implementation team consisted of Dr. Asmeati, S.T., M.T. from the UMI Faculty of Engineering as the team leader, along with member Drs. Muhammad Syahrir, M.T. from the UMI Faculty of Engineering.
Through this program, teachers were introduced to the utilization of duck eggshells, which are often considered household waste. These shells contain calcium carbonate, which has the potential to serve as a calcium source for plants after undergoing the proper processing.
Utilizing eggshell waste also serves as an alternative for reducing organic waste while introducing environmental management practices that can be applied within the boarding school environment.
Encouraging the Use of School Grounds
In addition to providing knowledge on waste processing, this activity is directed toward encouraging the use of school grounds as a productive educational space.
Teachers are expected to develop the knowledge gained into learning activities for students, particularly in introducing waste management, the utilization of local resources, and simple agricultural practices.
The Head of Mizanul Ulum Islamic Boarding School, Baso Udin, S.Ag., welcomed the activity positively. He believes that training that combines education, practical skills, and environmental awareness can provide benefits for the development of the boarding school.
“We highly appreciate the community service activity carried out by the lecturers of Universitas Muslim Indonesia. This training provides new insights for teachers regarding the utilization of organic waste into something useful. We hope the knowledge gained can be applied within the boarding school environment and serve as an inspiration for students to be more environmentally conscious and to utilize the school grounds productively,” he stated.
According to him, the skills acquired by the teachers can serve as a foundation for introducing environment-based learning activities to the students.
Duck Eggshells as an Alternative Fertilizer Material
The team leader, Dr. Asmeati, S.T., M.T., explained that the program is part of the university's effort to provide knowledge and simple technology that can be applied directly in the community.
The selection of duck eggshells as the training material was based on their potential to be reused rather than discarded as waste.
“Through this training, we want to encourage a shift in perspective regarding waste, specifically duck eggshells, which still hold potential for use. With proper processing, this material can become an alternative fertilizer to support the utilization of school grounds. We hope the teachers can develop this knowledge in educational and environmental activities at the boarding school,” she explained.
Asmeati hopes that the training will not stop at the delivery of material but can be continued through sustainable practical activities.
One step that can be developed is utilizing the boarding school grounds for farming activities by introducing the use of natural materials available in the surrounding environment.
With this approach, students are expected not only to gain theoretical knowledge but also to have the opportunity to understand its application in daily life.
Boarding School Teachers Appreciate the Training
This community service activity received a positive response from the participants. One of the teachers who attended the training admitted to gaining new knowledge regarding the utilization of waste that is easily found in the surrounding environment.
“This activity is very beneficial for us because it provides an understanding that waste like duck eggshells can still be processed into useful materials. We hope the knowledge gained can be applied in the boarding school environment and become part of the learning process for students so they are more concerned about cleanliness and environmental sustainability,” she said.
The training also opens opportunities for teachers to develop more contextual learning, especially in connecting educational material with environmental issues around the boarding school.
Utilizing waste into useful materials is expected to foster habits of managing waste more responsibly and increase creativity in utilizing available resources.
A Manifestation of UMI's Community Service
The implementation of this activity is part of the university's 'Tridarma' (Three Pillars of Higher Education), specifically community service, carried out by UMI lecturers.
Collaboration between universities and Islamic boarding schools is one way to expand the application of appropriate science and technology within the community.
The implementation team also expressed their appreciation to the Yayasan Wakaf Universitas Muslim Indonesia (YW UMI) for their support in organizing the activity at the Mizanul Ulum Islamic Boarding School, Takalar Regency.
Through this training, teachers are expected to be able to pass on the knowledge gained to students and develop sustainable environmental management activities.
The utilization of duck eggshells as fertilizer material serves as a simple step to introduce the principles of waste reduction, increase environmental awareness, and encourage the use of school grounds as a productive learning space.
