Takalar, JurnalPost.com — A total of 30 teachers from Mizanul Ulum Islamic Boarding School participated in digital-based scientific literacy and legal awareness training organized by a team of lecturers from Universitas Muslim Indonesia (UMI) in Sanrobone Village, Sanrobone District, Takalar Regency, South Sulawesi, on Thursday (15/10/2026).

The Community Service (PKM) activity, titled “Transforming Scientific Literacy and Legal Awareness of Teachers at Mizanul Ulum Sanrobone Islamic Boarding School through Digital-Based Training,” aims to improve the ability of educators to access, understand, and evaluate scientific information while strengthening their understanding of the law regarding the use of digital technology.

The training was held at the Mizanul Ulum Islamic Boarding School under the UMI Waqf Foundation, involving lecturers from two faculties at Universitas Muslim Indonesia.

The implementation team was led by Dr. St. Ulfah, S.H., M.H. from the UMI Faculty of Law, alongside Muhammad Arfah Asis, S.Kom., M.T. and Erick Irawadi Alwi, S.Kom., M.Eng. from the UMI Faculty of Computer Science.

The involvement of lecturers from the fields of law and information technology is part of a training approach that combines digital literacy skills with an understanding of legal responsibilities within the educational environment.

Through this activity, teachers are encouraged to be more critical when receiving information, especially that obtained via the internet and various digital platforms. The ability to verify information sources is considered increasingly important amidst the ease of access to diverse content that may not necessarily have a verifiable scientific basis.

Islamic Boarding School Teachers Need Digital Literacy Skills

The development of information technology has made it easier for educators to obtain references, compile teaching materials, and develop learning methods. However, this convenience also demands the ability to distinguish credible information from unverified information.

The Head of Mizanul Ulum Islamic Boarding School, Baso Udin, S.Ag., welcomed the implementation of the training. According to him, improving scientific literacy and legal awareness is a necessity for teachers in facing the changing world of education.

“We highly appreciate the community service activity carried out by the lecturers of Universitas Muslim Indonesia. This training is very relevant to the current needs of teachers, because educators are not only required to have teaching skills, but must also be able to understand information critically, utilize digital technology wisely, and have legal awareness in carrying out their duties. We hope this activity provides real benefits for improving the quality of education at Mizanul Ulum Islamic Boarding School,” he said.

Strengthening these capabilities is expected to help teachers develop learning that is more relevant to the needs of students.

In addition to being a means of obtaining information, digital technology can also be utilized to expand access to scientific references and support the development of learning materials within the Islamic boarding school environment.

Integrating Scientific Literacy with Legal Awareness

The head of the implementation team, Dr. St. Ulfah, S.H., M.H., explained that scientific literacy and legal awareness are two skills that need to be developed simultaneously.

According to her, the ability to understand information critically must be accompanied by an awareness of the responsibilities in using and disseminating information, especially in the educational environment.

“Scientific literacy is not just the ability to read information, but also the ability to understand, examine, and assess the truth of information based on accountable sources. Meanwhile, legal awareness is an important foundation for teachers in carrying out professional responsibilities and building an orderly and integrated educational environment. Through this digital-based training, we hope that teachers are better prepared to face the challenges of education in the era of digital transformation,” she explained.

She added that the collaboration between the fields of law and computer science in the activity is expected to provide a more comprehensive understanding to the participants.

The use of digital technology does not just rely on skills in operating devices or accessing the internet. Teachers also need to understand the importance of verifying sources, maintaining ethics in the use of information, and paying attention to legal aspects related to digital activities.

With this understanding, educators are expected to be more selective in choosing information to be used as references or conveyed to students.

Participants Hope for Application in Learning

The training received a positive response from the participants. One of the teachers at Mizanul Ulum Islamic Boarding School revealed that the activity provided additional insight into the importance of using digital technology responsibly.

“This training is very useful for us. We gained a strengthened understanding of the importance of checking the truth of information before using it, looking for reliable scientific sources, and paying more attention to legal aspects in educational activities. We hope this knowledge can be applied in learning and shared with other fellow teachers,” he said.

The knowledge gained from the training is expected to be applied in daily learning activities, including when teachers search for teaching materials, use digital references, or convey information to students.

In addition, participants are expected to share this understanding with other educators so that the benefits of the activity are not limited to the teachers who attended the training.

Strengthening Collaboration between Universities and Islamic Boarding Schools

The implementation of this training is part of the higher education 'tridharma' (three pillars), specifically community service, carried out by lecturers from Universitas Muslim Indonesia.

Through collaboration with Mizanul Ulum Islamic Boarding School, the lecturer team strives to present training materials that are in accordance with the needs of educators in facing developments in technology and information.

The implementation team also expressed their appreciation to the Universitas Muslim Indonesia Waqf Foundation (YW UMI) for its support in organizing the activity at Mizanul Ulum Islamic Boarding School, Sanrobone Village, Takalar Regency.

Collaboration between universities and Islamic boarding school educational institutions is expected to continue to be developed, especially in improving teacher competence and expanding the use of technology for educational activities.

Strengthening scientific literacy, legal awareness, and digital skills are important provisions for educators to face the challenges of learning that continue to evolve.

Through this training, teachers at Mizanul Ulum Islamic Boarding School are expected to be increasingly capable of using technology critically, understanding legal responsibilities in digital activities, and applying the knowledge gained to improve the quality of learning in the Islamic boarding school environment.
