Surabaya, JurnalPost.com — Creating a campus environment that is safe, comfortable, and free from all forms of violence is a crucial step in welcoming new students. Demonstrating their commitment to this goal, faculty members from the Accounting Department at Universitas Pembangunan Nasional (UPN) “Veteran” East Java held a socialization event focused on the prevention and handling of violence within higher education institutions.
The event, held on August 19, 2026, at Giri Loka, UPN “Veteran” East Java, was attended by 200 new students from the Faculty of Architecture and Design (FAD). The session aimed to raise student awareness regarding the importance of building an academic environment that is safe, inclusive, and upholds mutual respect.
During the event, freshmen received education on various forms of violence that can occur in higher education settings, ranging from physical and psychological abuse to bullying, sexual violence, and cyber-based harassment.
Beyond introducing these types of violence, the session provided insights into preventive measures, the steps to take if one becomes a victim or witness, and the importance of having the courage to report incidents through established campus mechanisms.
Students were also introduced to the role of the Task Force for the Prevention and Handling of Violence (Satgas PPK) and the Center for Violence Prevention and Handling and Counseling (PPKBK) at UPN “Veteran” East Java in supporting a safe academic environment.
Putri Dwi Aprilia Nur Khasanah, S.E., M.Sc., a lecturer in the Accounting Department at UPN “Veteran” East Java, emphasized in her presentation that creating a violence-free campus is not solely the responsibility of the university, but requires the active involvement of the entire academic community.
“New students need to know that they are not alone and are entitled to feel safe. Having the courage to speak up and report is the first step in breaking the cycle of violence,” she said.
According to her, understanding violence prevention must be instilled from the beginning of the academic term so that students have the courage to protect themselves while also showing concern for others.
The presentation was followed by a discussion and Q&A session. The new students showed great enthusiasm, engaging in discussions about various situations that could potentially lead to violence, including how to take appropriate action when facing or witnessing harmful behavior toward others.
Through this educational and participatory approach, students are expected to not only understand the forms of violence but also be able to apply values of empathy, care, and respect for others in their daily lives on campus.
This socialization activity aligns with the Regulation of the Minister of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology Number 55 of 2024 concerning the Prevention and Handling of Violence in Higher Education Environments. This regulation serves as a foundation for building a higher education environment that is safe, inclusive, equitable, and free from violence.
In addition to supporting violence prevention efforts, this activity is linked to several Sustainable Development Goals Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
From an educational perspective, the socialization supports SDG 4 (Quality Education) by striving to create a safe and inclusive learning environment. Education regarding the prevention of sexual violence, bullying, and discrimination also contributes to SDG 5 (Gender Equality) and SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities).
Meanwhile, the focus on students' physical safety and mental health aligns with SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being). The introduction of reporting mechanisms supports SDG 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions), while the involvement of various campus elements reflects the spirit of collaboration in SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).
In the context of improving higher education quality, this activity reflects the spirit of the university's Key Performance Indicators (IKU), particularly through faculty contributions to community service, the utilization of knowledge for the academic community, and the implementation of education that encourages active student participation.
Through this initiative, UPN “Veteran” East Java is expected to continue strengthening an academic culture that upholds safety, equality, and respect for the rights of every individual.
This socialization also serves as a reminder that violence prevention cannot be achieved through rules and reporting mechanisms alone, but also requires collective awareness and shared responsibility.
By equipping new students from the start of their studies, the university hopes to foster a generation of students who are not only academically excellent but also possess social awareness, the courage to speak the truth, and a commitment to creating a campus that is friendly, safe, and free from all forms of violence.
