Embracing emotional vulnerability as a path to mental resilience.

The Growing Need for Mental Health Services

Recently, the public has been stirred by the high volume of users accessing the Healing119 service. This first-aid psychological crisis service provided by the Ministry of Health has been so heavily accessed that it has caused long queues. The increased demand for this service also became a point of concern after the Free Health Check (CKG) program identified various mental health issues within the community.

However, this high demand has not yet been matched by adequate service capacity. In a single three-hour shift, only about five psychologists are on standby, while the number of users can reach 500 to 600 people. This condition has forced counseling sessions to be limited to a maximum of 30 minutes.

This situation is certainly a shared concern. Amidst the rising need for psychological support and limited access to services, an important question arises: what can we do to maintain our mental health?

One approach that can be understood and applied in daily life is the concept of emotional vulnerability or emotional vulnerability.

Understanding Emotional Vulnerability

Amidst various situations beyond our control, perhaps the effort to remain mentally healthy begins with the courage to admit our weaknesses and accept the reality that we are not always okay.

Showing vulnerability does not mean giving in to circumstances. On the contrary, the courage to acknowledge feelings can be the first step toward understanding oneself and building better emotional health.

In psychology, this relates to the concept of emotional vulnerability, which is a person's willingness to recognize, accept, and express their emotions honestly, even when there is a risk of facing judgment or negative responses from others.

Emotional vulnerability is not something that should always be avoided. When managed healthily, emotional vulnerability can help a person build more authentic relationships, understand themselves, and face various life challenges more adaptively.

Brené Brown, through her research on shame, vulnerability, and human connection, emphasizes the importance of the courage to accept one's imperfections and build relationships based on openness.

Emotional Vulnerability

Suppressing or denying feelings continuously can hinder a person from understanding their emotional needs. Conversely, the ability to be open about feelings can help a person accept reality, seek positive support, and build healthier interpersonal relationships.

Thus, being mentally strong does not always mean being able to hide sadness or face all problems alone. Sometimes, strength actually emerges when a person dares to admit that they need support.

Maintaining Mental Health by Building Emotional Vulnerability

Amidst limited access to psychological services, we can start learning to be more honest about our own feelings. This does not mean that emotional openness can replace professional help, but rather that it serves as a step to maintain psychological health in daily life.

There are several simple steps that can be taken to build emotional vulnerability in a healthy way.

1. Realize, Recognize, and Manage Emotions

The first step is learning not to ignore the emotions we feel.

Positive or negative emotions that arise as a response to an event are a natural part of the human experience. Feelings of sadness, disappointment, anger, fear, or happiness need to be realized and recognized before we decide how to respond to them.

Accepting emotions does not mean letting them control all actions. Instead, by understanding what is being felt, we can learn to manage our responses more wisely.

Not all feelings need to be resolved immediately. Sometimes, giving yourself space to understand your emotions is an important step in maintaining psychological balance.

2. Build Mutual Trust and Set Boundaries

One of the difficulties often faced by someone experiencing problems is determining who they can talk to.

Various questions arise within: can this person be trusted? Will they understand our situation? Or will they instead provide judgment that makes the situation even more difficult?

Therefore, emotional openness needs to be built alongside trust and healthy personal boundaries.

Start by selecting people who can be a place to share, especially those who are willing to listen with empathy and are not quick to judge. They can come from your closest circle, such as friends, parents, partners, teachers, or others you trust.

It is important to understand that being open does not mean we have to tell all our problems to everyone. We still have the right to determine what we want to share, with whom, and when the right time is to do so.

3. Accept that Vulnerability is Part of Being Human

Basically, no human is always strong or able to face all of life's problems alone.

Moreover, amidst the rapid flow of information, social pressure, life demands, and various news that can affect psychological conditions, a person may more easily experience anxiety, stress, and emotional exhaustion.

In situations like this, admitting that you are not okay is not a form of failure.

We do not always have to look strong in front of others. There is nothing wrong with crying, expressing sadness, asking for time to rest, or seeking help when feeling overwhelmed.

Accepting vulnerability means understanding that every human has limitations and needs support at certain times.

So, start checking in on each other, providing space to listen, and strengthening one another. Because, in facing various life problems, we do not always have to walk alone.

Ultimately, Emotional Vulnerability Is About Honesty

Emotional vulnerability basically invites us to build more honest relationships with ourselves and others.

Learning to recognize emotions, accepting imperfections, building trusting relationships, and maintaining personal boundaries are part of the effort to care for psychological health.

Vulnerability is not always a sign that someone is losing their strength. It is precisely through the courage to be open that a person can gain a better understanding of themselves and find the support they need.

In a life that often demands everyone to look tough, we need to remember that being human means having the space to feel various emotions, including sadness, fear, and uncertainty.

In the end, showing weakness does not immediately make us collapse. Sometimes, it is the denial of our own feelings that slowly drains our strength.

Because being strong does not mean never feeling weak, but rather having the courage to acknowledge feelings, accept the situation, and keep trying to move forward.
