When Home Becomes Both a Workplace and a Family Space
Behind the success of a mompreneur, there is a constant struggle to divide time, energy, and attention between business and family. Maintaining work-life balance is not just a matter of managing a schedule, but an effort to preserve personal health and business sustainability.
Being both a mother and an entrepreneur is no easy feat. For a mompreneur, the home is not just a place to gather with family; it is also a space to run a business, serve customers, manage orders, supplement family income, and develop business strategies. Amidst these activities, the responsibilities of being a mother and a wife must still be fulfilled.
Mompreneur is a term referring to mothers who engage in entrepreneurial activities while managing family responsibilities. These mothers conduct business activities in between the busyness of raising children, performing household chores, and caring for their husbands (Saningoutra et al., 2016).
The decision to become a mompreneur is generally driven by the desire to earn additional income, develop creativity, pursue interests, and have the flexibility to remain close to the family. However, the expected flexibility does not always mean a lighter workload.
According to Dhaliwal (2022), the greatest challenge faced by a mompreneur is maintaining a balance between work and family, managing time, and prioritizingfamily dependent careover work.
Activities such as taking children to school, preparing meals, cleaning the house, and meeting family needs often occur simultaneously with the demands of running a business. This condition makes the boundary between work life and personal life increasingly blurred.
Work-Life Balance: More Than Just Dividing Time
Work-life balance is a crucial aspect of maintaining the sustainability of a mompreneur's business. This balance does not mean a mother must divide her time equally between work and family, but rather that she is able to perform various roles effectively and feel satisfied with the life she leads.
Achieving work-life balance is not just about dividing hours on paper, but about aligning time, emotional engagement, and inner satisfaction. This balance exists when a mother can carry out business responsibilities without losing warm moments with her family or time to recharge her personal energy.
Every mompreneur has her own way of doing things. Some mothers succeed in building firm boundaries through disciplined working hours, while others choose a more flexible pattern by running their business in the spare time after household chores are completed.
The key is not in the similarity of methods, but in the awareness not to neglect the needs of the family and one's own mental health.
This shows that there is no single time management pattern that applies to all mompreneurs. Balance needs to be adjusted to the family's condition, the characteristics of the business, and the needs of each individual. More importantly, it is essential to ensure that business demands do not completely take over personal life.
Work Overload and the Lurking Risk of Burnout
When business and family demands continue to increase, a mompreneur is at risk of experiencing physical or emotional exhaustion. Work overload is one of the external factors that affect work-life balance.
Data from the 2025 Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) shows that family reasons are one of the main factors for women discontinuing their businesses, accounting for 22.9%.
This condition illustrates that the sustainability of women's businesses is heavily influenced by their dual roles in child-rearing and household responsibilities. This situation potentially limits their time, energy, and capacity to maintain business existence amidst competition.
Conflict between household roles and work (work-family conflict) has a systemic impact that goes beyond individual mental health issues.
The imbalance in the allocation of time and energy not only erodes household harmony but also threatens the sustainability of the businesses managed by mompreneurs. Many female entrepreneurs are forced to cease business operations due to poor time management and the pressures of dual roles that are not accommodated.
This condition raises a discussion regarding the benchmarks of entrepreneurial success. Sustainable business performance improvement does not rely solely on financial growth, but also depends on the stability of mental health, the resilience of family relationships, and the life satisfaction of the business owner.
Family Support and Delegation as the Key
Mompreneurs can achieve a balance between work and household responsibilities through task delegation and strengthening family relationships as a strategy to realize work-life balance.
With task delegation, a mompreneur does not have to carry all responsibilities alone. Delegation can be done by involving family members in household chores, asking for help from a caregiver, or dividing operational business responsibilities among employees.
This step can reduce the burden on a mother so she has more time to fulfill her other roles.
In addition, communication and family involvement play an important role. A partner's support in child-rearing and domestic work can help a mompreneur face daily demands.
Such support provides practical and emotional assistance when a mompreneur faces pressure.
Besides external support, an individual's ability to engage incontinuous learning, be flexible, and recognize personal limits is also highly necessary.
A mompreneur can set priorities, create a realistic schedule, distinguish between urgent needs and tasks that can be postponed, and set aside time for rest and me-time.
Protecting personal time is not a form of neglect toward the family or business, but part of an effort to maintain one's capacity to handle both.
However, relying solely on personal and internal family strategies is often not enough. As highlighted by GEM (2025), female entrepreneurs face very high levels of stress due to limited social support and recurring pressure in maintaining the balance between work and personal life.
The imbalance between domestic demands and business or work demands is a primary trigger for emotional exhaustion .
Therefore, it is crucial to integrate support forpsychological well-beingandresilience buildinginto the wider entrepreneurial ecosystem.
This approach can be realized through the formation of an emotional support environment viapeer networksand mentorship, the provision of online training, and the equipping of entrepreneurs with stress-reduction techniques and effectiveboundary settingso that female entrepreneurs can maintain their mental health.
Best practices regarding the importance of this integration can be seen from various global initiatives.
In the United States, the organization The Startup Ladies provides support through various channels to meet the needs of business founders, including hosting a "Mental Health for Business" series that specifically addresses psychological challenges such as stress, isolation, and operational burnout through facilitated discussions with psychologists, psychiatrists, and social workers.
Meanwhile, in Nigeria, the Digital Women Entrepreneurs Marketplace Enablement (WEMEN) platform from Accion builds a comprehensive support system aimed at empowering female entrepreneurs with a focus on increasing self-confidence, innovation, and independence as the main drivers of sustainable business growth.
Business Sustainability Starts with the Entrepreneur's Well-being
The business sustainability of a mompreneur is not only determined by the ability to manage finances, market products, or retain customers. The entrepreneur's well-being is also an inseparable aspect of business continuity.
When a mompreneur is able to manage her roles in a more balanced way, she has a greater opportunity to maintain the quality of her personal life while running her business consistently.
Time management, social support, and the ability to balance responsibilities are important parts of the mompreneurexperience.Without time management andemotional balance , a mompreneur is highly susceptible toburnout
. Ultimately, being a mompreneur
is not about the necessity to always be able to finish all work or meet all demands perfectly.
Success is also reflected in the ability to recognize personal limits, accept help, build supportive family relationships, and provide space for oneself to rest.
Because a sustainable business requires an entrepreneur who also has the opportunity to grow, be healthy, and be prosperous. Thus, a mompreneur with a balanced life orientation tends to have good psychological well-being
so that she can fulfill her goals and ambitions to continue working after marriage and childbirth (Mehta & Parikh, 2022).
