JurnalPost.com - The rapidly changing business world demands that companies possess more than just capital, technology, and strong marketing strategies. There is one crucial factor that determines whether these strategies can truly be executed: human resources (HR).

Companies may draft excellent business plans, but achieving them will be difficult if they are not supported by a workforce with the numbers, competencies, and capabilities that match the organization's needs. Therefore, HR planning should no longer be viewed merely as an administrative task, but rather as an essential component of the company's overall business planning (Lay et al., 2024).

HR Planning Must Follow Business Direction

Business planning essentially determines the direction a company aims to achieve, ranging from increasing sales, market expansion, and product development to improving operational efficiency and implementing new technologies.

Each of these goals requires the support of a workforce with different characteristics and competencies.

When a company wants to expand into a new region, for example, planning should not only cover capital, location, facilities, and market potential. The company must also calculate the number of workers needed, the positions that must be filled, the required competencies, and how those employees will be recruited and developed.

Thus, HR planning should ideally be conducted in tandem with the formulation of business strategy, rather than being considered only after business decisions have been finalized. This approach helps companies ensure workforce readiness when strategies are implemented (Hadiati et al., 2024).

HR as the Driver of Corporate Strategy

Ultimately, people are the ones who execute almost all of a company's strategies. Technology, capital, facilities, and work systems will not yield maximum results if they are not supported by a workforce capable of managing them.

A mismatch between business strategy and HR conditions can lead to various problems. Companies may face labor shortages in certain positions, overstaffing in others, low productivity, and increased training and recruitment costs.

Conversely, if HR needs are mapped out from the business planning stage, companies can prepare their workforce in a more targeted manner.

The relationship between human resource planning and an organization's strategic plan demonstrates that workforce needs must be aligned with the direction, goals, and targets the company aims to achieve (Khairunnisa & Bawie, 2023).

Digital Transformation Changes Workforce Needs

The integration of HR planning and business planning is becoming increasingly important amidst the development of digital transformation and artificial intelligence (AI).

Digital transformation is not achieved simply by purchasing new devices, applications, or systems. Companies also need employees who are capable of using that technology effectively.

Investing in technology without preparing workforce competencies risks failing to maximize the benefits of that technology.

Therefore, HR planning needs to include an agenda for skill enhancement or upskilling, training, competency development, and adjusting workforce capabilities to technological changes.

The synergy between strategic HR planning and the use of artificial intelligence is becoming increasingly relevant in building corporate excellence in the digital business era (Tarigan et al., 2024).

Building Competitive Advantage

The integration of HR and business strategy can also help companies build a competitive advantage.

Employees who work in positions that match their competencies and understand the company's goals can contribute more optimally to achieving organizational targets (Nasrul, 2026).

In this context, human resource management strategy no longer stands alone. HR management becomes an integral part of the company's strategy for facing competition.

The integration of strategic management and HR management allows companies to direct recruitment, placement, competency development, performance appraisal, and career planning according to organizational needs (Firmansyah, 2025).

Companies are not just looking for people to fill empty positions, but are determining what kind of talent is needed to reach business targets for the coming years.

HR Planning Needs Periodic Evaluation

HR planning cannot be done just once.

Market conditions are constantly changing. Technology evolves, organizational structures may undergo adjustments, consumer behavior shifts, and new business models can emerge in a relatively short time. These changes will ultimately affect a company's workforce needs (Kusuma & Rindaningsih, 2023).

Therefore, companies need to periodically evaluate the alignment between business strategy and the human resources they possess.

Evaluation can be done by looking at the number of workers, employee distribution, available skills, new competency requirements, and employee readiness to face change.

Strategic HR planning allows companies to forecast future workforce needs while determining the steps required to meet those needs (Fortega, 2022).

In this way, companies have time to prepare their workforce before needs become urgent.

HR is Not Just a Cost, but a Strategic Investment

Ultimately, integrating human resource planning with business planning is not just an option, but a necessity for companies that want to survive and grow sustainably.

Business strategy provides the direction for what the company wants to achieve, while human resources serve as one of the primary forces that determine how those goals are realized (Syamsiah et al., 2025).

Therefore, companies need to view HR as a strategic investment rather than just a labor cost component.

This investment can be realized through proper recruitment processes, competency development, continuous training, talent mapping, career planning, and employee placement based on organizational needs.

When workforce needs, competencies, employee development, and business goals are designed as a single unit, companies will have a stronger foundation to face change.

This integration can ultimately create alignment between organizational needs and the capabilities of the existing human resources, while simultaneously increasing the company's chances of achieving its goals effectively and sustainably (Irianto et al., 2025).
