JurnalPost.com The development of generative AI is transforming the creative industry by enabling the creation of images through text prompts. While this accelerates the visual conceptualization process, it also raises concerns that AI may reduce job opportunities for illustrators, particularly freelancers who rely on client commissions.
However, the profession of an illustrator will not disappear entirely. A 2025 ILO report suggests that AI is more likely to transform specific tasks rather than eliminate jobs altogether. Illustrators remain essential for developing ideas, defining concepts, assessing quality, and refining visual outputs.
While AI can enhance creative productivity, the work it produces often lacks uniqueness when used repeatedly. Research by Kameo and Gupte (2025) indicates that AI influences work practices, the evaluation of creative output, technology adoption, and the professional identity of illustrators. Consequently, the value of the creative process, authenticity, and human ingenuity remains paramount.
From a human resource management perspective, illustrators need to develop a broader range of competencies, such as creativity, communication, an understanding of client needs, digital literacy, and the ability to use AI ethically. Knowledge of copyright and originality is also necessary to maintain visual identity and the value of one's work.
Ultimately, AI should be viewed as a tool rather than merely a competitor. Illustrators must continue to learn and adapt, as their true advantage lies not only in their drawing ability but also in their capacity to generate ideas, provide value, and make decisions that cannot be fully replicated by technology.
